The most promising young group of Zimbabwe, childhood friends from Victoria Falls have taken the world music scene by storm in 2012 with their rocky debut, Rising Tide. The much awaited next release, this year’s Luyando takes a more placid acoustic approach, with a more pronounced social message and emphasis on tradition, while endearingly accessible. The six members hail from the Tonga community, but draw on a wide range of African heritage: they sing in shona, luvale és ndebele apart from English; blend highlife, socca, afro beat, soukous, reggae and ancient chants to give Mokoomba’s Afro fusion groove, defined by lead singer-composer Mathias Muzaza’s gutsy vocals. There is no messing around: Mokoomba always give a hundred percent of tight music, spirit and joy.
